About

Designed by Casey Brown Architecture as one man’s retreat from the world, Permanent Camping at Mudgee is now open for the world to enjoy. With views across the pristine wilderness of central western NSW, the eco-friendly tower is the perfect size for two people and was conceived with a minimal footprint, which opens up to bring the landscape in. This truly is a unique camping experience, and one to be savoured.

  • One of the most unique and beautiful spots I've been to in Australia … The actual accommodation is incredible with every little detail thought out, creating a little bit of luxury in the bush. Thoroughly recommended.

    Tom, Sydney,
  • [We] have had the privilege over the years to stay in a number of five star resorts over Australia and the world and staying at your camp was more enjoyable and relaxing than staying at those places. We feel privileged to have stayed there.

The Story

Our story begins nearly 30 years ago with a boy, a horse and a few lost sheep. Jason McDonald was in his early teens and helping his father to track down wandering wethers on the family property near Hargraves, 60 kilometres from Mudgee. His search took him and his horse over a neighbour’s fence and into remote bushland.

“I jumped a fallen-down boundary fence, rode through rugged bush and was suddenly in a clearing with amazing views,” he remembers. “It made a lasting impression on me.”

So lasting, in fact, that, decades later, Jason convinced his neighbours to part with the hilltop land, with its spectacular views overlooking the Macquarie River, and began building a cabin campsite. One man’s escape into the country he loves. Now, Jason is sharing his dream.

Now, you get to be part of the story.

Video

The film looks at inspiration, design and construction of this unique and totally sustainable shelter. A beautiful combination where the raw natural materials and elements have created a stylish elegant structure of sophisticated solitude. The film was screened at the World Architecture Festival, in Barcelona where the project was short listed for an award.

The Camp

  • The two-story copper clad tower features sides which open up on the ground level, creating wide verandahs to the north, east and west, and an airy living space. Recycled ironbark and glass interiors add to the stylishly rustic feel, with a kitchen and Rais wood-fired slow combustion stove downstairs, and sleeping loft upstairs. Climb the ladder to the double bed made up with soft, linen sheets, and snuggle under a feather doona and hot water bottles in winter. Heavily insulated, the tower is cool in summer and warm in winter, with water tanks capturing rainfall, which is gravity-fed to the kitchen. A separate WC, also in copper-clad hardwood, is located a short walk away, and boasts some of the best views you’ll ever enjoy.

  • Set on 1800 acres in the central west of NSW, on the tourist drive between Mudgee and Hill End, Permanent Camping Mudgee is perfectly sited to take in views of the rugged Australian landscape for hundreds of miles around. Providing inspiration for artists and writers, dreamers and lovers, the ever-changing colours of the panoramic views and the billions of stars overhead at night are truly magical. The tower is located 60km (one hour’s drive) from Mudgee, or 20km (30 minutes’ drive) from the nearest village of Hargraves. It has no address. That’s part of the magic.

  • One of the true joys of Permanent Camping Mudgee is its out-of-the-way location. But this can mean that getting there is a mini-adventure all of its own via a 7km bush track, which winds through grazing paddocks and rugged bushland. We will chauffeur you, free of charge, to the tower in our sturdy 4WD, but you can choose whether to ride in style in the cabin or safari-style on the back. Either way, you’ll get to take in spectacular views. While you’re with us, make the most of the peace and the quiet, saving Mudgee’s wineries and restaurants to enjoy either on the way to or after your stay at Permanent Camping.

  • The property features marked bushwalking trails, taking in a diverse landscape of native bush and clearings. Visit creeks with permanent waterholes, enjoy an abundance of native flora and fauna, marvel at interesting rock formations and, of course, drink in the stunning views. Mostly, though, what Permanent Camping Mudgee offers, is true peace and quiet, time to think, space in which to create or meditate, and a place to breathe, or simply to be.

  • Permanent Camping Mudgee offers you the choice to self-cater or enjoy our hamper of seasonal local produce, which includes:

    • Breakfast
    • Morning tea
    • Lunch
    • Afternoon tea
    • Dinner (includes bottle of local wine)
Either way, we supply tea and coffee, plus a complimentary bottle of local wine on arrival.
